I once had a job that involved, in part, the development of new cut flowers for the florist trade. The specifications were that the plant needs to have stems of flowers that could be cut 3 feet long, the flowers can be sent without dying in the process, and that flowers should last at least 3 weeks in a vase. Ideally, the flowering of the plant could be controlled so that flowers could be produced at any time of year, in a variety of climates, the plant is resistant to insects and diseases that could damage flowers, and be available in a variety of colors. If the flowers were being developed for home gardeners, their selection criteria would be something different. You I would also like resistance to insects and diseases, but their emphasis would be more for the variety of colors and fragrances, compact growth, flowers in a season, and things like tolerance of different soil types, drought tolerance, etc.. Things like long stems, shipping tolerance and long life in a vase, it would not be as important to a home gardener, as it is for a florist. Moreover, most home gardeners who want a variety of flowers, not only dozens of red roses for Valentines. A rose by any other name smell as sweet (probably not an exact quote from Shakespeare), but the flowers using a florist has a different purpose than the flowers of a home gardener use.
